Parkrun – We Came, We Saw, We Paced

We Came, We Saw, We Paced

Last Saturday, the 4th of October, saw the inaugural parkrun pacing takeover by the yellow and blue of the greatest running club in Finchampstead -the Coasters. For those of you that don’t know, parkrun is a free, weekly, fun-filled timed 5K run held at 9am every Saturday in parks around the globe.  See our excellent article all about it here for a quick catch up).

Our mission, which we chose to accept, was to provide the pacers for the bi-monthly pacing event at Woodley parkrun. 11 intrepid volunteers (and a few hangers on) paced from 20mins to 38mins (in 2minute intervals) and provide the tailrunner to no runner would come last.

So how did we do? Not wanting to brag too much, not bad at all! Their were no DNFs, no granny-related incidents and we were mostly close to our pacing times.

We were led out by Damian Holmwood who did an excellent job coming in a tad under his 20 minute target. Next along was me, Paul Mackenzie, spot on my target of 22 minutes, followed by Nathy Feely (+5secs), chairman Simon Crute (-12secs), and Pete Humphreys (+4secs – after a sneaky extra little loop to lose some time!),

Pacing 30mins was Rhodri Jones and 32mins was Helen Pool. Both slightly strayed from their pace goal to help some PB-hunters behind them to glory, and then 34minute saw Chris Aitkin nail it, 36 minutes in Rob Tuck dipped the tape just 4 seconds over, just under 38 minutes Niamh Feely cruised in and everything was rounded off nicely by Clare Cooper providing tailrunning duties in style.

Also we should mention fastest Coaster on the day, Enda Ward who, with a time of 18:17 was less than 15seconds off his PB. Thanks to all the other Coasters who turned up on the day to help support the club. A list of (most of) the runners can be found on the results page for the Parkrun site here
